Derek, Aaron, Max, Nataniel, Trevor, Roger, Jeannie and ... Superjerm?

This week’s group post asks the Phuthu girls the following question:
Which South African comedian, TV personality and artist do you admire/inspires you, and why?

Louise:

Comedian
Does Gareth Cliff and Leanne Mole count? Probably not I’m guessing… My man, Superjerm, does he count? Cos he is darn funny. Sharp, very sharp.

TV Personality
Without a shadow, inkling or speckle of doubt, my number 1 choice is none other than Derek Watts. He is dedicated to a show that is dedicated to informing South Africans about current matters, making them more aware and essentially trying to rally support for a better South Africa. And I just love that!

Artist
To be honest, I can’t choose one. There are so many artistic, creative talents out there – from the folk who sell their pottery at flea markets to all the arts and crafts projects featured on websites like Babazeka to South Africa’s amazing array of musicians – it’s difficult to pinpoint one. They all embody passion for their craft and so irrespective of the creative field or even the level that someone’s at, I find these people collectively inspiring and refreshing!

Elzet:

Comedian
Aaron McIlroy
– he is so funny that it I find it very difficult to compose myself when he’s doing his thing. Why he inspires me? His life took a 180-degree turn and he proved that it is possible to be hilarious without being crude – quite a tall order in the entertaining world.

TV / Public Personality
Max du Preez
– one of South Africa’s foremost investigative journalists, author, columnist and documentary filmmaker. He won awards for conscience and integrity in journalism and for fearless reporting. Imagine the freedom of being able to do fearless reporting – he must have a set of titanium goons that enables him to be this brave. I love the fact that he speaks his mind, whatever the consequences. As long as it goes hand-in-hand with respect, that is.

Artist
I love Nataniel. Everything about him. His honesty, his humour, his creativity, his very funny (but sad) stories and his musical ability. Great entertainer!

Katrine:

Comedian
At the moment my favourite comedian is without doubt Trevor Noah. His father is Swiss and his mother is Xhosa, and he speaks and understands six languages. Trevor is so sharp and quick-witted, I can’t wait for him to come to Durban – I will be the first one to book a ticket to see his show. Apparently his first show in Joburg this weekend was a huge success!

TV Presenter
I am tired of all the TV personalities who take themselves sooo seriously, so I am going to say Jeannie D. I admire the fact that she is always so full of life and takes on any challenge she is faced with on her travels for Top Billing. Her vivacious nature, adventurous spirit and fun attitude always puts a smile on my face.

Artist
As for the artist, photographer Roger de la Harpe (and his wife Pat) is my choice. When I was on a story for Country Life a few years back I had the privilege of sharing a meal and a few chilli tequilas with the de la Harpes as well as two other brilliant National Geographic photographers – at Pistols Saloon on the KZN South Coast. Their incredible tales of exciting photo assignments inspired me to buy my own camera and start snapping away.

  1. Arial says:

I love both Nataniel and Trevor! Trevor is the most natural and funny presenter and I’m proud that he is South African. I would love to have Nataniel as a close friend, to be able to discuss recipes and make-up and to gossip about my daughters’ latest fashion disasters! Louise, I’m sure your man’s got a wonderful sense of humor, must have to deal with the 4 of you!
    Have a wonderful day!

  2. Juan says:

Julius Malema gets my vote for the best comedian!

  3. Editor says:

@Arial – Nataniel seems to be a popular choice!

@Juan – Check out Zapiro’s new “ZA news” website, Malema is a popular guest on the show. Should provide you with some great entertainment :)
